THE SPIRIT OF THE FEAR OF THE LORD

TEXT: Isaiah 11:2, Psalm 111:10, 2Cor 7:1
Isaiah 11:2
And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;

Psalm 111:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

2Cor 7:1
Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

MESSAGE
The fear of the Lord actually means reverence for the Lord. This is the type of reverence a child should have for his father. This reverence is a manifestation of love that makes us value our fathers so much so that we obey him at all times, whether it be convenient or not. Now that is exactly what the Spirit of the fear of the Lord does in us. This is different from a morbid fear or dread "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind". (2Tim 1:7)

When you reverence God, it is the first evidence that wisdom is at work in you (Psalm 111:10). This seem to be lacking among Christians today. That is why people want to argue that grace is a license for their indiscipline and appetite for canality. Nothing could be farther from the truth! Grace makes the fullness of the Spirit available to us--including the Spirit of the Fear of God. If grace is really working in your life, you'd so love and appreciate God that you'd hate to willfully sin against him!

You may receive the revelation of the plan and will of God though the Spirit of wisdom who also empowers you to walk in them; you may receive the knowledge of Him and what He has freely given us through the Spirit of Knowledge. But at the end of the day, you still have the will power either to resist this moves of the Holy Spirit or to yield to them. The Spirit of the fear of the Lord will impress the reference of God to you so much that you will prefer to exercise your will in the Honour of His Name in every situation whether it be palatable or otherwise. See 1Pet 3:15, 2Cor 7:1. The wife will not only submit to a nice and perfect husband, but will do so out of the loving reverence for God. The husband will love his wife despite her shortcomings because he fear the Lord. You should honour your parents, no matter how terrible they are, because the God you reverence who requires you to honour them, did not say to honour only nice parents

Well, the good news is that, when we keep on drifting too far from the fear of the Lord, the Spirit of the fear of God can step in and with the rod of judgement and do some scary things to make people fall back in line and fear God. He's the one that struck Ananias and Sapphira dead when they began to take the grace of God for granted in lying to the Holy Spirit. The Bible says that when the Spirit of God was done with them "great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things." (Acts 5:11). You don't want to wait to be a scapegoat for teaching men to fear God, do you? Then let the Spirit of the fear of God operate in you now. Just decide to reverence God in your heart thoughts and action.
